Preparing Boards

Using scrub, joiner, and smooth hand planes, these rough sawn boards are made straight, smooth, and the required thickness. If a piece of furniture takes 100 hours to build, it probably requires 50 hours of hand-planing. The boards are then crosscut to length, ripped to width, or extended using tongue-and-groove joints.
